• NNTP issue?

From Nick Boel@1:154/700 to All on Wed Oct 7 02:19:28 2026
    Hello, All!

I setup Fidomail with an nntp connection. The first 3-4 messages I initially pulled down seem to be getting re-pulled and displayed as new almost every time I open the app (not if i close and reopen, but if i check back a few hours later). I have the version -98 announcement, Michiel's request to remove a photo hosting service, and Dmitry's reply to that message 3 or 4 times in my current message list of only 12-15 messages total (I don't remember exactly and can't look now).

Did I setup wrong or is the nntp connection sending something upon connection it shouldn't be?

    Regards,
    Nick

    Hello, All!

Synchronet BBS? Well, I've almost forgotten that it has NNTP support!

Did I setup wrong or is the nntp connection sending something upon connection it shouldn't be?

Synchronet has multiple NNTP issues. The most important is broken LISTGROUP support: it claims to support the command, but it doesn't. The Message-ID/MSGID implementation for NNTP is also very strange! And the charset for CP866 Russian messages is completely broken (reported as KOI8-R).

In any case, I've fixed the NNTP implementation in FMM to fully support Synchronet's dialect.

    What is tested/supported:

    FidoMail (server version)
    FIDOGATE + INN
    FIDOGATE + leafnode
    ifmail + INN
    ifmail + ifnode
    Synchronet
    MBSE
    binktermphp
    ENiGMA½
    InterSquish
    Mystic
    JamNNTPd
    Taurus
    WendzelNNTPd

New release (1.16) will be tomorrow.

    See you,
    dp.

Since you're doing so much testing and finding of these issues. It would probably be greatly appreciated by many if you would report them at gitlab.synchro.net. Otherwise, they probably go unnoticed for the most part.

    Thank you!

IIRC, it's all integrated with his (Rob's) services. You may have to create an account on his BBS (Vertrauen - vert.synchro.net), and use your login credentials you made there on gitlab.

It's not the best process, but it does work once you're actually logged in.

Amazingly, some guy called Stephen Hurd even added IMAP support into SBBS! If you know him, tell him I owe him a pint of beer :) So sad that IMAP in SBBS is read-only.
So sad that very few people ever realised that IMAP is so much better than NNTP for accessing public echo/newsgroups.

I’ll register next week, but for now, a very good news: Google just approved my new version of FidoMail Mobile with all the fixes! Superfast!

Yeah, Synchronet is updated almost daily, and bugs and/or feature requests are handles very promptly. That's why it probably has the biggest fan base for a BBS software. ;)

Honestly, I never had any interest in doing this stuff on a phone. Never tried Aftershock or any of the others, but.. I finally brought myself to try out Fidomail on mobile, after trying the desktop version first. ;)

The desktop version is really terrible! It will probably take several more months to polish it, because it was never actually planned or properly designed. It was just an experiment to port the mobile version to the desktop.

But the mobile version is not so bad! Although I use it very rarely ;) But as long as users are interested, I’ll implement whatever they need.

I didn't want to get into specifics or say anything negative, but thank you for saying it first! ;)

I didn't care for the desktop version, so I then tried out the mobile version. I'm glad I did.

Understood. I could definitely see that it was more geared towards mobile devices.

But the mobile version is not so bad! Although I use it very rarely ;)

The mobile version is very nice and polished. It definitely does it's job, and does it well. Although I'm still not completely sold on FTN messaging from my phone, nor do I think I will ever do it regularly.. I wanted to test it out and see what I was missing out on!

To be fair, the fact that you (and others) are still creating new software for this hobby, including BBSs, tossers, editors, etc. is probably one of the main reasons I haven't closed everything down here and given up on the hobby. So keep up the great work! ;)

BTW, having a desktop version gives a very interesting feature: you can export the database from the mobile version, import it on desktop, edit/add whatever you want, and export it back.

In Jamnntpd there is a special newsgroup type for netmail. It shows messages only to you and from you.

I think that is a problem for fidomail. It cannot read all the messages and it gives up.

It’s a broken NNTP design in JamNNTPd, for both RFC 977 and RFC 3977.

In RFC 977 (which JamNNTPd used for implementation, according to the documentation), 503 means “program fault - command not performed.”

My bad that I didn’t test this part of JamNNTPd :(

The workaround will be in the next release, probably in the second part of this week (v0.1.20+102 is still in review by Google and it has a lot of internal changes, so I am not sure that it will be reviewed quickly).
