• FidoMail Mobile 0.1.17+99 - nodelist, spell check, date format

From Dmitry Protasoff@2:5001/100 to All on Thu Oct 8 16:41:28 2026
    Hello All!

Version 0.1.17+99 is out. After two desktop releases, this one has
plenty of changes for the mobile version too.

    - Nodelist. The app now carries the FidoNet nodelist and can keep it
current from cdn.fidonet.cc (by hand by default; the schedule is
set under Settings -> Nodelist -> Check for updates). Tap an
address in the message header or in the origin line, or pick "Look
up sender in nodelist" from the message menu (F10 on the desktop),
and the node's card appears: system name, sysop, location, flags,
binkp, and for a point the details of its boss. From the card you
can write a netmail, add the node to the address book, search the
nodelist, or open the node's history on nodelist.fidonet.cc
(nodelist.5001.ru for users in Russia; Settings -> Nodelist ->
Node history site). The nodelist browser (Ctrl+Shift+B on the
desktop) shows the whole nodelist and searches by address, sysop,
system and location. Picking the recipient in the composer now
supports search too. Other networks can be added with their own
nodelist URL or a local file.
    - Refresh from server. IMAP and NNTP echoes have "Refresh from
server" in the echo settings and in the echo menu: the newest
messages are downloaded again. Nothing is deleted or duplicated,
and read marks and stars stay. Handy when the server has changed
how it renders messages, or repaired one after you downloaded it.
    - Date format: Settings -> Look -> Date format. Day and month as
before, with the year, with the month spelled out, the system
locale, or a pattern of your own.
    - Search finds a Cyrillic word typed with Latin letters that look
alike (a Latin p, H, c or y in place of the Cyrillic twin), and
the other way round. A message opened from the search results is
scrolled to the first hit, and every hit is highlighted.
    - Replies now quote whole paragraphs, not lines: a message written at
79 columns no longer comes back as full lines alternating with one-
    and two-word stubs.
    - Spell check while you write, using the dictionaries installed on
your device, for all your languages at once: a word is marked only
if none of them knows it. Right-click (long-press on the phone)
    for suggestions. Settings -> Spelling.
    - BBS pipe colour codes (|09, |15) in signatures are shown as colour,
under the same switch as ANSI art (Settings -> ANSI colour art). A
Mystic ad no longer opens with a literal |CL.
    - Names and subjects that FTS-0001 cut at 35 or 71 bytes are shown
whole when the message carries the FSP-1030 UCS lines.
    - IMAP and NNTP from a fidomail node: the tearline and the origin
are back in the message text.
    - NNTP: Cyrillic articles labelled with the wrong charset (seen on
Synchronet, InterSquish and Mystic) are decoded correctly.
    - WaterGate's AreaFix robot is recognised.

In the plain-text editing mode (the desktop default, a switch on
    the phone):

    - Enter inside a quoted line now behaves correctly.
    - Find and replace in the draft (Ctrl+F, Ctrl+H).
    - "Remove selected lines", "Delete line" and "Reflow paragraph" in
the editor menu, with keyboard shortcuts.
    - A status line under the text (line, column, the line's length
against the wrap width) and a thin guide at the wrap width.
    - Escape closes the Settings menu correctly.

The new version has been submitted to Apple and Google for review,
for publication on the App Store and Google Play. The site already
    has the new version.

The Play Store is still two versions behind! I went there today to get the NNTP fixes in the previous version. I'll check again later. ;(

    ;(

Google wants 2-3 days, on average, to publish a new version.
    Apple wants about 1-2.

This time Google also rejected the version with the NNTP fixes. Their AI-based scanner found a permission type problem (FOREGROUND_SERVICE) in code that hasn't changed since I got into the Play Store. I've already submitted a fix, but it may take longer, since rejected apps can be escalated to a human reviewer, and that's even slower (some cursed words here).

Still, let's hope for the best, and in the meantime the APK on the website can be used anytime :)

    See you,

It’s Google’s requirement, I cannot put an apk update method into the app in the Store.

I installed from the play store. So I probably never had that option. ;)

    Hi, Dmitry!

It would be nice to add an option you can give the echo a discription name, like you can do into AfterShock...

    Thanks!

Current version imports the description name from uplink's AreaFix, but yes, the next release will allow the user to set the description themselves.
